As designers, we are often required to broaden our linguistic skills, especially when you are dealing with overseas clients. Not that we need to learn every major language available on Earth, but I can’t see why some people think that English is not important as your second language.
From this point of view, there is one particular word that Indonesian designers often failed to understand. The word is, yes, “DEADLINE”. “Deadline” is often miswritten as “Dateline”. I don’t know where this came from, but since in Indonesian accent, both “Deadline” and “Dateline” can sometimes be heard as homophones (Although that is not completely true if you pronounced it right), that’s probably the reason why some actually understand “Deadline” as “Dateline”.
When searching a definition of both words (using Google’s “define:” command), two of the results are as follow:
Dateline: Words at the beginning of a story giving the story’s place of origin
Deadline: The time at which an article is due
So the next time you wrote, “I don’t have much free time because I have so many datelines,” you might want to recheck your glossary, or you could create a confusion for your English-speaking clients. And hey, there’s nothing wrong with being not so ignorant about English.
